before you let any guests in
you need shelter, need a home in your own skin
it mightn’t be decadent but it cannot be desolate
where’s the happiness?

If we can shut the fuck up
maybe we can learn to smile for once
and we’ve all got something to say
living in a human menagerie

We’re each complete with the gall to believe
our problems are sophisticated, bold, unique
smiles with no teeth
embraces with no squeeze
gestures for manners, no audible ‘please’.

It’s all been idle talk
and I’ve had nothing of substance to say
we talk about people
not about ideas or how we came to be this way
